Ihave a 2001 f650gs dakar with 75000 miles on it. Apart from routine maintenance items (chain, oil, suspension seals), the only issue I had with it was the starter sprag clutch grenaded, so I had to change that and fish all of the metal shavings out of the oil. I never had surging issues and just use copper plugs.
Nevergood to have a bad tail/brake light on a motorcycle. 1 Cold starting with a bit of throttle (one of my bikes requires it below 60 degrees) 2. Starting it only after waiting a real long time after you turn the key to let the pump pressurize more. 3. unhook airbox sensor- sometimes null is better than a bad reading. 4. unhook exhaust sensor. #5. . Oddometer 1,968. Location: Sonoma CA. The clacking sound can be the cam chain slapping around, from a failed cam chain tensioner. It's not unheard of. For you to check, you would need to get in under the valve cover or remove the tensioner, which is not very easy on the GS beacuse of the plumbing nearby. Althoughit is very smooth, it is almost impossible to find nuetral without significant tapping and lifting of the pedal and releasing of the clutch. I have often had to struggle forward from the lights in second gear. Never had this problem before with any of my other bikes (Kawasaki Er5, Kawasaki GT550, Honda Hornet 600, Yamaha Sr125).

Boughta 2003 Dakar in January 2010. Wife bought a 2005 650GS in February 2010. Put around 2000 miles on the Dakar on mostly gravel roads, some back woods two tracks and some tarmac. No surging. 55-65 mpg. Dakar now has 9000 miles on the clock. No complaints with either bike.

SOURCE Instrument Cluster needles stuck -- Electrical Problems. Needles stuck indicative of instrument cluster complete failure. Cause unknown. This is second instrument cluster that has failed on this bike, first one failed at about 3000 miles, twenty-two months ago. This "new" one died in mid May 2008.

2 · Jan 21, 2020 If the owners have looked after it very carefully and changed the oil regularly then 50k miles is not a huge mileage for an F650GS engine. The engine is fitted with a Nikosil lined cylinder which means that the bore should last a long time.
